I'm narrowing in on a goal I have, which is to make my first feature film based on a true friendship I had with my childhood best friend. I've never submitted to a screenwriting contest before and I've always wanted to. Three years after completing version 6 of my feature, I thought why not give it go. The problem was finding one that was credible, within budget and worth the investment.
I've been signed up to ISA's (International Screenwriting Associations) newsletter for some time now and when I saw a free entry for The Great Pitch Competition, I thought why not. Of course this is how they get you - so inevitably one thing led to another and I found myself submitted to three contests, with a one year membership to the ISA, plus an evaluation on my script for $223USD.
Will anything come of it? I don't know, but this is the path I chose whether I see success or rejection, I've taken a chance and invested in myself. I did the thing I said I've always wanted to do.
If nothing else, I'm proud that I completed a feature script that I could enter into fellowships, screenwriting contests and grants. One that is true to my story, that has made three people cry and that I'm actively working to get made - my way, with patience and discernment.
I am also a member of Stage32 so perhaps when I'm ready (ok, when my wallet is), I may check out some contests on there too. In the meantime, I'm back to writing, packaging and helping clients.
The screenwriting competitions I submitted to are:

The Great Pitch Competition
