There is A LOT of misinformation these days, especially with the rise of AI and use of social media. As someone that wants to stay informed for issues on both sides of the border there are a few newsletters I subscribe to so I can receive direct, well-reported journalism. I am not affiliated with any of these.

For Ottawa (Canada) - I grew up in the Nation's capital and have a lot of loved ones there. I also do quite a bit of work there, so it's important for me that I have some idea of what's going on.

1) The Ottawan
This is written and edited every working weekday by Martha and Darren. They round up the top stories, things locals are talking about, events and business deals, and they do it in a very fun, casual way. https://theottawan.com/

For California:

2) CalMatters
CalMatters’ journalists explain the most important issues in California and you can subscribe to seven different newsletters. I was subscribed to daily, but switched to weekly. https://calmatters.org/subscribe-to-calmatters/

For Global:

3) What Could Go Right?
A LinkedIn newsletter by Zachary Karabell, the Founder of The Progress Network that rounds up a weekly collection updates of positive global progress. What I often need to balance out everything else.
